Casino expansion in the Quebec City region has been a topic of discussion for quite some time, as it could draw more people to the area. The Huron-Wendat Nation recently expressed its desire to oversee the operation of a tribal casino venue in the region. As of now, the only gaming option in the area is Salon de Jeux de Quebec, the gaming hall that fell amid a turmoil with a potential transformation into a casino venue.
Commercial and tribal casino venues both have their signature features making them a special place to be at. Often players have the opportunity to choose between a casino venue operated by a commercial casino operator and a tribal one and see the opportunities for themselves. Quebec City has neither of those gaming offerings as of now since it features solely a gaming hall. The First Nation recently made clear its desire to bring its gaming plans to life.
First Nation Seeks Casino Operation
Konrad Sioui, Grand Chef de la Nation Huronne-Wendat, said that for the time being the possibility of a tribal casino in Quebec City is being considered. Weighing the pros and cons of a new gaming location in the capital of the province is something the tribal nation is taking seriously. The new endeavor would be able to offer additional funding for the tribal community.
Tribal casino venues are often used by First Nations as a source of steady income for many community members, as well as a financial engine that propels various community projects with its revenue. The possible casino operation could happen in partnership with Loto-Quebec, the local gaming giant overseeing lottery and gaming offerings within the province.
In order to attract as many individuals as possible, the new venue would have to be built in a high-traffic area. Such an opportunity provides a parcel of federal land in the Sainte-Foy area. In its vicinity, there are the 135 stores and restaurants of Place Sainte-Foy, the Place de la Cité shopping center, as well as Laurier Quebec, the shopping center with the largest number of tenants in Quebec City.
Sainte-Foy Could Welcome Casino
The parcel of land eyed by the First Nation amounts to some 1.3 million square feet of land, but it does not have to welcome a tribal casino venue only. An entire complex could be constructed, featuring more family-friendly offerings and businesses. A casino venue powered by the Huron-Wendat Nation has been considered a possibility for about five years now with conversations being in progress.
Ottawa officials would have to give their approval of the project, but for the time being no additional details have been publicly issued. Tribal gaming in Quebec is usually associated with Playground Casino in Kahnawake, overseen by the Mohawks of Kahnawake. Meanwhile, field cannibalization concerns have also been expressed earlier this week.
Michel Couturier, Mayor of La Malbaie, said that Quebec City does not need a casino venue when Casino de Charlevoix has been attracting quite the crowd of individuals. The contemplated transformation of the gaming hall into a casino venue would be the death of Casino de Charlevoix, according to previously issued estimations.
