Sports wagering in New York continues to see a downward progression, as the four commercial casino locations in Upstate New York revealed. Their monthly revenue information is telling about the attitude towards in-person sports betting, marking a 41-percent drop when compared to its performance in October. Earnings generated over the month of November amount to US$1.3 million, marking a decline from October’s US$2.2 million.
In-person betting on single sports events is the legal wagering offering across New York State, as state lawmakers could not pass mobile and online sports wagering on time. Neighboring states such as Pennsylvania and New Jersey have the mobile betting offering up for grabs and New Yorkers feel compelled to give them a try every once in a while, traveling there.
NY Marks 41-Percent Slump
July was the first month of commercial casino sports betting, allowing players across the state to place their wagers at the brick-and-mortar casino locations overseen by commercial casino operators and tribal ones alike. November was a month seeing an even lower slump of sports wagering earnings, as the local field managed to amass US$1.3 million all in all.
It could be recalled that the previous month witnessed another shortfall when compared to September and the NFL Season craze. November marked a 41-percent drop when compared to the previous four weeks of sports wagering taking place at the four commercial casino locations. Regardless of the downwards progression, events on which players could wager abound and the local wagering field is missing on substantial net revenue which it could otherwise bag.
October saw a similar monthly report issued by the New York State Gaming Commission shedding more light on the local sports betting opportunities and attitudes. According to it, the month of October saw a 4.4-percent drop in gaming revenue generated by the sportsbooks located in the four commercial casino resorts. Those are Rivers Casino and Resort Schenectady, del Lago Resort and Casino, Resorts World Catskills, and Tioga Downs.
Drop Hits Commercial Casinos
Gains for the four casino locations were nowhere to be found in November, instead replaced with losses when compared to sports betting performance in October. Tioga Downs Casino Resort and del Lago Resort & Casino witnessed the biggest drop amounting to 60 percent in gaming revenue. For reference, New Jersey managed to amass US$46.4 million in sports wagering revenue over the five weeks of October.
New Yorkers consider the local in-person wagering field to be a rather restrictive one, as they have to physically make their way to a casino venue. This means a car drive for the individuals living outside a casino host community, often creating inconvenience. January is about to see the Legislature convene, which would make it possible for mobile sports betting supporters to put a provision on the 2020 New York State budget.
Moreover, the local field still waits for the findings of a gambling study that would shed light on the gambling field. Executive Director Rob Williams stated earlier this fall that the leading factor of this study would be accuracy, instead of the speed it is conducted at. The new timeline would result in a six-month review, the findings of which are projected to be issued by June 1, 2020. It would take into account plans for future mobile sports betting and the way it could impact the budding field.
