Montezuma, one of several WMS slot machines which have made an impression on players over the years, is part of a small series that the developer released. Launched in 2014, the original Montezuma is still a solid option for players, but keep reading, and you will find out why that is.
They designed Montezuma as a slot machine which offers 30 paylines on 5×3 reels. Spin those reels with wagers ranging from $0.30 to $60 per spin, sending up to $2 to each line. While keeping the RTP at a respectable 95.86%, the game promises to pay up to $180,000 (3,000x the stake), though that’s only possible during free spins. The free spins have up to 10x multipliers, you trigger them via scatters, and the game also adds wilds to some of the reels.
The famous Montezuma, ruler of the Aztecs during the invasion of Spanish conquistadors, defeated and killed in the process, is the one to have inspired the design of this slot machine. As is often the case in these South American themed slots, the treasures of the Aztecs are the ones that are being promised here.

Bonus Features Deconstructed
As it seems to be the case with quite a few of the older WMS slots, Montezuma has two feature symbols, and the bonuses it offers revolve around the usual wilds and free spins. Luckily, they make sure to vary the extras a bit, and the end result tends to be fun for players.
First, check out the wild symbol, the one showing you the Aztec Temple. You will find it only on three of the five reels, the middle ones. They are used as replacements, and only together with regular symbols. No rewards are paid directly by the wild.
Second, you have a Feature symbol, an Aztec Shield, colored in black and gold. These are scatters, which you need appearing three or more times, in a single round. In exchange, the game gives you a prize (3x to 10x the stake) and access to free spins.
A Wheel spins initially to reveal the number of free spins, with 3 to 25 rounds possible. Once the feature gets going, the Wheel spins before each round, to reveal a multiplier for its wins. The values possible are 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x. It’s at this point, that we find the highest potential for Montezuma, since a regular payout of 300x can be turned into 3,000x, if the multiplier is at the right value.
Retriggering the free spins will be possible with 2 or more Shield scatters. The additional free games have the same multiplier as the round when they were obtained.
