Scrolls of Ra HD is an iSoftBet title from 2013 that got its last update in 2016. The game oozes Ancient Egyptian aesthetics and is very well made for the time.
Of course, being a drop in the ocean of video slots inspired by Ancient Egypt, Scrolls of Ra HD is not unique in its theme, but the abundance of bonus elements makes it worth checking out. The game is not without its drawbacks, which we will also mention, so you get a complete picture.
Theme and Visuals
The theme of this game should be apparent from the title. We are inside an old Egyptian temple, with almost hypnotizing flute music playing all the time. A portion of the symbols is shown as hieroglyphs, while others include diamonds and various ornaments.
Even though Scrolls of Ra HD is not the first nor the last slot exploring this overused theme, we must admit the developers have done a pretty good job with the sounds and visuals. The symbols and background artwork are nothing short of amazing, and the game conveys the mystic atmosphere it’s trying to sell. The scrolls play a vital role as they are tied with one of the bonus features.
Gameplay
Scroll of Ra HD has a typical layout of five reels and three rows. You must match at least three symbols on one of the 20 fixed paylines for a win. The paylines work from left to right, starting from the first reel, and only the highest win per line is awarded.
The exception is the scatter symbol, which pays independently of the paylines, even when only two show up on the reels.
Card marks 9 through A serve as low-value symbols, while more valuable prizes come from matching the hieroglyph symbols. Special symbols include the scatter (game logo), the wild (an eye), and two bonus symbols (a scroll and Ra). We’ll talk more about these when discussing bonus features below.
To start playing, simply click the green Spin button on the control panel below (right of the screen if you’re playing on mobile in landscape mode). The autoplay feature allows up to 1,000 automatic spins, with advanced settings enabling you to regulate win and loss limits. You can set your wager by pressing the coins icon.
Bonus Features
The most fun and original part of Scroll of Ra HD is its bonus features. There are three of them, so you likely won’t have to wait for ages for at least one to trigger.
The feature with the most significant potential is the Ra Bonus. This triggers when 3, 4, or 5 Ra symbols appear anywhere on the reels. You’ll see 25 treasure chests with the option to choose any three. Each treasure chest hides an instant prize, and the rewards are added together when you finish.
The Scrolls Bonus unlocks when the scroll symbol appears on reels 1, 3, and 5. Said reels are then covered with three scrolls — Scroll of Purity, Scroll of Darkness, and Scroll of Power. You may only choose one of these to grant you an instant prize.
We must admit that this bonus game is a little underwhelming since it only consists of an instant prize similar to the Ra Bonus and doesn’t add anything to the gameplay. The three scrolls have no actual characteristics to them. They are each assigned a name and some symbolism but function just like random treasure chests.
The wild symbol in this game has two functions. As usual, it replaces other symbols to create a winning combination, except for special symbols, but it also triggers free spins. Namely, when the wild lands in the middle of any reel, it will expand to cover the entire reel and award 5 free spins. The expanded wild will remain in place for the duration of the free spins, during which it’s possible to trigger both the Ra Bonus and Scrolls Bonus.
You’ll also notice that the game has a scatter symbol, shown as the game’s logo. This is just a regular scatter that pays whenever there are two or more of it anywhere on the reels.
RTP and Payouts
Scroll of Ra HD has an RTP of 95.71%, slightly below average. Since there are 20 fixed paylines, each spin costs 20 times the selected coin value multiplied by the bet per line, which ranges from 1 to 5. The minimum bet is just 1¢, with the maximum being $100.
Mobile Compatibility
Despite being a little outdated, Scroll of Ra HD is optimized for mobile play. It functions on all the latest smartphones and tablets, and you can easily rotate between landscape and portrait modes.
Final Verdict
You might scroll past Scrolls of Ra HD when browsing online slots, as it doesn’t really look original considering its theme. But you definitely should stop and give it a chance. Its bonus features make for stirring gameplay, even though some aspects could have been better designed.
It’s been a long time since Scrolls of Ra HD hit the online casino shelves for the first time, but the game’s age is not stopping it from still being present on many Canadian casino sites, so don’t miss the opportunity to try it out.
