The legality of gambling in Canada is defined by the Criminal Code of Canada. As it’s impossible to go over the whole code, it’s important to note that gambling is deemed illegal in Canada but each provincial government has the right to set its own gambling rules and regulations. Luckily for bettors, most provinces have deemed some forms of gambling legal. In the case of Saskatchewan, most forms of gambling are considered legal, including sports betting.

The Alcohol and Gaming Regulation Act from 1997 sets the basic gambling rules in Saskatchewan as it regulates the process of issuing licences, defines violations, laws, and rules of gambling in the province. Just as important is the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation Act, which regulates the most important rules for the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation.

However, as with almost all Canadian provinces, there are a few catches. Sports bettors are not able to place bets just anywhere as all wagers need to go through the Sports Select service. The service is not available only in Saskatchewan, but also in Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Manitoba, and Western Canada. So, if you want to go through the Sports Select service, you will have to limit some of your options when it comes to wagering.

Although the legal gambling age in Canada is 18 years, Saskatchewan has the right to change that number within the borders of its own province, meaning that the legal gambling age in Saskatchewan is 19 years.

How Does Sports Betting Work in Saskatchewan?

Saskatchewan residents need to use the Sports Select service to place wagers on their favourite sports team or player. The Sports Select service is available through licensed retailers, meaning that players can place bets at certain gas stations or convenience stores or simply stay home and wager online.

Players are not permitted to wager more than C$250 on a single parlay in one day. If you’re interested in higher bets, you would have to make daily wagers to get to a certain quota. When it comes to available sports to bet on, the variety is not as big as one would hope but enough to make regular bets. Players can rely on basketball, football, hockey, baseball, and soccer events to pull them through.

So, if you’re interested in sports betting in Saskatchewan, here are your options:

  • Pro-Line — The pro-line bet is the most common among players as they have to select up to six games and decide on their final score (win, away win, or tie). Only if all parleys are accurate, the player gets paid. The maximum bet is C$100.
  • Point Spread — On point spread tickets, you can include up to 12 selections with a maximum bet of C$100. With each accurate prediction, the total point spread increases.
  • Over/Under — An extremely popular bet with Saskatchewan bettors where they need to predict if the final score will be over or under a previously set number. You’re allowed up to ten selections and a maximum bet of C$100.
  • Pools — A pools bet is great if you like competing against other players. You need to accurately predict the winners of upcoming games so as to move up on a leaderboard. Not all positions on the leaderboard get a share of the pool prize, of course.
  • Props — If you’re interested in more detailed bets, you can opt for a props wager. Select two players and bet on the one that you think will have better stats. You’re limited to two players from a maximum of six different games.
  • Double Play — Double play is a combination of a pro-line bet and an over/under bet on the same ticket. Up to six selections are permitted.
  • Combo Play — A double play bet combined with a point spread bet.

Are Offshore Sports Betting Sites Illegal in Saskatchewan?

Offshore casinos are not breaking any laws by operating in Saskatchewan as there are no official rules or regulations regarding international sports betting sites in the province. As long as the operator is located outside Canadian borders, Saskatchewan residents can access and register with the website.

Furthermore, there is no prescribed punishment in Saskatchewan’s law for players accessing offshore betting sites, so you’re good to go. With offshore sports betting sites, you will be able to take advantage of lucrative bonuses and promotions, as well as a wide variety of sports and betting options. Remember to stick with regulated and licensed sports betting sites to avoid potential scams.
